The HUB Celebrates Social Prescribing Day: Looking Back and Planning Forward

March 19th, was Social Prescribing Day – an annual global celebration recognizing the positive impact social prescribing has on people's health, well-being, and communities.

What is Social Prescribing?

Social prescribing recognizes that health and wellbeing go beyond traditional medical care. It's a holistic approach that connects people to non-medical support in their communities – activities, services, and resources that address the social, practical, and emotional factors affecting their lives. Instead of focusing only on symptoms or diagnoses, social prescribing looks at the whole person. It might mean connecting someone experiencing loneliness to a community group, helping someone struggling with stress find a walking group or creative outlet, or linking someone facing financial worries to practical support services.

Social prescribing is about choice, empowerment, and connection – helping people find the right support, at the right time, in a way that works for them.

Our Social Prescribing Day: A Team Strategic Planning Session

Here at the Well-Being HUB, we marked this important day by coming together as a team for strategic planning, reflection, and forward thinking.

The past few months have been full of growth and impact. We took time to celebrate key accomplishments, including:

- the development and launch of our Mental Wellness Ambassadors Certificate Program, which has connected community members with mental health literacy and practical support skills

- the creation of our Peer Support Network, with trained volunteers ready to offer understanding and hope based on lived experience

- expanded community partnerships that strengthen our ability to connect people to resources, and

- growing awareness of the Well-Being HUB as a trusted source of mental health and wellness support in our region.

Each of these achievements represents countless hours of collaborative work, community engagement, and a shared commitment to making mental health support more accessible and connected to community life. They embody the principles of social prescribing – meeting people where they are and connecting them to meaningful support.

Looking Ahead: Future Programming and Events

The strategic planning day wasn't just about celebrating past wins – it was about envisioning what comes next. Our team engaged in deep conversations about how we can expand our impact, reach more community members, and continue building a robust social prescribing ecosystem in our region.

We explored new programming possibilities that address emerging community needs, identified opportunities to deepen partnerships with health care providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders, discussed ways to make our programs even more accessible to rural and isolated community members, and brainstormed creative approaches to mental wellness education and support.

Why Social Prescribing Matters in Rural Communities

Social prescribing is particularly vital in rural areas like ours, where traditional medical and mental health services can be difficult to access due to distance, limited specialist availability, and long wait times. By building strong community-based support systems, we create pathways to wellness that don't depend solely on clinical services.

Our programs – Visiting Buddies,  Senior & Wellness Navigation, Mental Wellness Ambassadors Certificate Program and Peer Support Network – are fundamentally social prescribing initiatives. They connect people to education, peer support, community resources, and meaningful activities that support mental wellness. They recognize that healing and health happen not just in clinics, but in community centers, living rooms, coffee shops, and anywhere people gather with care and intention.
