From May 4 to 10, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is championing better mental health through stronger social connections.

Their "Come Together, Canada" campaign underscores the vital link between human connection and our mental health. Increasingly our lives are lived digitally, and as a result, isolation and disconnection are on the rise. CMHA’s core message this year reminds us that we are not alone in navigating the challenges we face.
Research ties loneliness and isolation to increased risks of anxiety and depression, while a sense of belonging remains essential for emotional health.
Meaningful interactions trigger the release of dopamine and oxytocin, decreasing stress levels thereby improving heart health. By fostering a strong social network, we build on our personal and community resilience together.
Prioritizing social connections can even lead to better immune function and longer life expectancy. The question remains: how do we effectively cultivate these networks?
Focus on quality over quantity. Genuine connections provide a support system during trials and a space to share joy. Deep bonds often begin from simple interactions like:
Chatting with a neighbor at the local coffee shop
Participating in community events or local programming
Exploring shared interests and hobbies with others
Checking in on friends or family members you haven't seen lately
Remaining open to new acquaintances and relationships
Choosing in-person meetings over virtual ones when possible
Collaborating on special projects at work or school
Asking for support whenever you feel you need it.
